Buy DJI if: you want a drone at any price point from entry-level to professional, the most mature app and flight-assist software, the widest network of spare parts and repair shops, and you’re willing to accept DJI’s geofencing restrictions in exchange for that polish. DJI is the safer default for the large majority of buyers in 2026, partly on its own merits and partly because it no longer has a full-lineup competitor.

Buy Autel if: you specifically want a mechanically variable aperture and no built-in geofencing at the prosumer tier, and you’re comfortable spending $2,000+ on the EVO II Pro V3 — Autel’s only remaining consumer-facing model. If you’ve seen the EVO Nano+ or EVO Lite+ recommended as a “DJI alternative” on other sites, that advice is out of date. On July 18, 2025, Autel Robotics published an official notice ending the product lifecycle of both the EVO Nano series (EVO Nano / EVO Nano+) and the EVO Lite series (EVO Lite / EVO Lite+), stating it would “concentrate resources” on other product lines. The company stopped selling and marketing both series through official channels worldwide as of that date. A Note on US Regulatory Status (Read This Before You Buy)

Update, September 2026: Since this guide was first published, a new and separate FCC proposal has emerged that specifically targets LiDAR-equipped drones — including the DJI Air 3S and DJI Mini 5 Pro discussed throughout this guide. Details are below; if you’re weighing a LiDAR-equipped model, read this section in full before buying.

Here’s the regulatory timeline in order:

December 22, 2025 — the Covered List. Both DJI and Autel — along with all foreign-manufactured drones and critical drone components — were added to the FCC’s “Covered List,” following a national-security review mandated by the FY2025 National Defense Authorization Act. In practical terms, this blocks newly submitted drone models from either brand from receiving the FCC equipment authorization required to be imported and sold in the US going forward. On its own, it does not ban the ownership, import, or continued sale of models that had already received FCC authorization before the listing — which, as of this writing, includes every currently available model discussed in this article (DJI Mini 3, Mini 4 Pro, Mini 5 Pro, Air 3/3S, and the Autel EVO II Pro V3).

January–May 2026 — both companies challenge the listing. DJI filed a Petition for Reconsideration (FCC docket ET Docket 26-22) and Autel an Application for Review (ET Docket 26-23) in January 2026. The FCC opened a public comment period in March 2026, and the Department of Defense filed a memorandum around the FCC’s April 6, 2026 opposition deadline arguing against removing either company from the list, citing classified and unclassified intelligence (with a classified annex submitted to Congress on April 3). Reporting from PetaPixel, DroneDJ, and TechRadar identifies the DJI Air 3S and DJI Mini 5 Pro — both covered in this guide, and both of which use LiDAR for obstacle avoidance — as directly within the proposal’s scope, alongside other DJI models such as the Avata 360 and Neo 2 (not covered in this article) — reporting suggests the full list of affected models may be broader than what’s summarized here. DJI has publicly called the proposal a “total reversal” of the FCC’s own prior authorizations and urged pilots to file public comments opposing it.

The FCC’s public comment period on DA 26-758 closed as scheduled on September 2, 2026. Three industry groups had asked the FCC to extend the deadline to September 30, 2026, citing the complexity of the proposal, but the FCC denied that request, citing national-security urgency. As of this writing (early September 2026), the FCC has not announced a decision — the docket remains under review, and this is still a proposal, not a final rule. Nothing has been adopted, and no drone currently on sale has actually been banned under it. If the FCC does adopt it as written, import and sales restrictions would reportedly take effect roughly 180 days after any final rule is adopted and published — not 180 days from the original July proposal — and no adoption date has been set, so the scope and final wording could still change based on the comment record. Autel’s EVO II Pro V3 does not use LiDAR and has not been named in reporting on this particular proposal, though Autel remains subject to the separate Covered List described above.

We’re presenting this as neutrally as we can: both brands are Chinese-founded companies currently subject to overlapping federal reviews, both are actively contesting them, and neither has been found to have violated any law in a court proceeding — these are national-security policy determinations and proposals, not criminal or civil findings against either company. DJI Mini 5 Pro — the new wildcard, now with its own regulatory question mark — Autel still doesn’t have a direct competitor for DJI’s Mini series, but the Mini 5 Pro deserves its own callout because it changes the “you need to spend $2,000+ to get a 1-inch sensor” framing that used to work in Autel’s favor. Released September 17, 2025, the Mini 5 Pro starts at $759, weighs under 249 grams (no FAA registration required), and is the first drone in DJI’s Mini line to carry a 1-inch sensor, backed by LiDAR-assisted obstacle avoidance.
